What is Photobiomodulation (PBM) Therapy?

Photobiomodulation (PBM) Light Therapy is a groundbreaking treatment that utilizes specific wavelengths of red, green and near-infrared light, applied to tissue where there is degeneration or injury, to repair and reduce inflammation and pain. PBM works on the cellular level, stimulating cellular function and accelerating the body’s natural healing process by targeting the mitochondria and reducing oxidative stress, which is accepted as the underlying trigger for most diseases and degenerative conditions, and a key component in the inflammatory phase of acute and chronic injuries.

Photobiomodulation offers a wide range of benefits, including reduced inflammation, accelerated tissue repair, and enhanced overall wellness. Since 1996, researchers at Harvard Mass General, NASA and more have proven that LED light therapy speeds recovery from injury and illness, rejuvenates aging skin and improves athletic performance – all with zero side effects!

Why should I incorporate Photobiomodulation Therapy into my wellness journey?

At its core, photobiomodulation involves the use of low-power light-emitting diodes (LEDs) or lasers to emit specific wavelengths of light that penetrate the skin and interact with our cells. This exposure to light stimulates a series of biological reactions, including the production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), which is the primary source of energy for our cells.

The key to PBM’s effectiveness lies in its ability to stimulate cytochrome c oxidase, a crucial enzyme in our cells’ mitochondria. By enhancing the activity of this enzyme, PBM promotes cellular energy production, leading to a cascade of benefits such as improved tissue repair, reduced inflammation, and overall better health.

Why Photobiomodulation Works: The Connection between Light and Healing

The therapeutic effects of PBM are backed by extensive scientific research and clinical studies. It has been proven to be effective in treating a wide range of conditions, including:

  1. Pain management
  2. Wound healing
  3. Muscle recovery
  4. Inflammation reduction
  5. Skin rejuvenation

PBM works by targeting the root cause of various health issues at the cellular level. By boosting the cells’ energy production and overall function, this therapy accelerates the body’s natural healing processes and fosters an optimal environment for recovery and wellness.

Photobiomodulation Therapy FAQs

Here are some of our clients’ most commonly asked questions about PBM, but if you would like to know more, just click here to contact one of our specialists!

PBM Therapy, also formerly known as Low-Level Laser Therapy, uses the application of red and green light to stimulate tissue repair, increase production of cellular energy, reduce inflammation, and reduce pain. Light is absorbed at the cellular level, targeting the cause of inflammation by reducing oxidative stress. This process stimulates the production of cellular energy (ATP), promoting healing, regeneration, and optimal cellular function. Extensive research over the last two decades has revealed oxidative stress can lead to chronic inflammation, which in turn contributes to chronic diseases including cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, neurological disorders, and pulmonary diseases.
Photobiomodulation Therapy works at the cellular level, stimulating repair and normalizing cell function. Many therapies only address symptoms without addressing the source. That said, chronic degenerative changes often cannot be “healed,” instead they must be managed. PBM Therapy is a safe, effective, drug-free therapy that has been shown to reduce pain and inflammation at its source.
This non-invasive therapy has been shown to be highly effective for acute and chronic Musculoskeletal conditions such as sports injuries, Fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, Neuropathy, arthritis pain, gout, and more.
There are currently over 400 clinical trials (RCT) and 4000 laboratory studies on Photobiomodulation Therapy (PBM), with up to 30 new research papers a month being reported on Pub Med.

Unlike high intensity lasers, PBM Therapy does not actually heat up tissue. It does, however, increase circulation so a warming sensation is often experienced. The following outcomes have been reported by clients – these outcomes may not apply to every person, and are not intended to guarantee, promise, represent, and/or assure that anyone will achieve the same or similar results:
• Temporary euphoric feeling
• Increased energy levels
• Improved sleep patterns
• Improved skin clarity and tone
• Decreased swelling of extremities
• Increased mental clarity
Increased general sense of well-being

Occasionally, some clients may experience mild fatigue, discomfort, or aches after a session. These responses should reduce after 24-48 hours.

Every person’s physiological conditions are unique, therefore each person’s reaction to Photobiomodulation Therapy will be unique as well.
There are, however, some general rules of thumb that apply to PBM: Acute injuries and inflammation from muscle strains and sprains, cuts, bruises, burns, etc., typically show very rapid improvement and can resolve in 2-4 sessions. Long-term, chronic conditions can take as many as 12 sessions to get significant benefits, then weekly or bi-weekly sessions may be necessary to maintain benefits.

PBM is considered a safe and non-invasive treatment with minimal side effects when used appropriately. It has been approved by regulatory agencies like the FDA for certain applications. However, it is essential to follow the recommended treatment protocols and seek guidance from a trained professional to ensure safety and effectiveness.

While PBM is generally considered safe and effective for most people, there are some contraindications. It is not recommended for individuals with active cancer, pregnant women, or those with photosensitive conditions. Always consult a healthcare professional before starting any new treatment to ensure it is appropriate for your specific needs.

Treatment parameters for PBM vary depending on the target tissue, the desired outcome and the light source used. Parameters include wavelength, power density, treatment time, pulse frequency and the total energy delivered. Our trained professionals will be able to determine the most appropriate parameters for each individual case.

During a PBM treatment, you may feel a gentle warmth or tingling sensation at the treatment site as the light is applied. Most patients find the process comfortable and relaxing. The length of the treatment session depends on the specific condition being treated and the treatment parameters used.

The duration of PBM’s effects depends on the individual and the condition being treated. Acute conditions may have long-lasting results after just a few treatments, while chronic conditions may require ongoing maintenance sessions. A trained professional can help determine the most effective treatment plan for each individual case.

Yes, PBM can be used in conjunction with other therapies to enhance their effectiveness. It is often used alongside physical therapy, chiropractic care, massage, and other treatments to support overall healing and wellness.
